DAY 11-- Pinwheel in the Winds

Day 11 of Do Something New Everyday Challenge--October 29, 2012

wet pinwheel

Hurricane Sandy's here. I was sitting in the kitchen by the window and noticing how the wind was bullying the trees outside. I lamented the fact that I didn't have any pretty pinwheels to calm the wind with...until I realized I could make one! ladies and gentlemen, I MADE PINWHEELS TODAY! Wish I could tell you guys that I designed it all on my own based on my awesome knowledge of physics but...directions were taken from here.

First, I took a regular printer paper and cut it into a square which was then divided into four equal squares.

Step 1 >>>>>>>>> Step 2

Then, I colored...within the lines and made a diagonal cut from the corner to about 3 cm from the center. (Ni, I decided to make a pinwheel instead of writing a scary story and making you one of the characters...so this pinwheel is for ya...muah!)

Photobucket Step 4

I folded every other edge toward the center so they overlapped and replaced my finger with a push pin. Putting in the push pin was so hard! I was scared of stabbing myself. Took me forever, but finally, I placed the pinwheel on my bed and pushed the pin through. no bloody fingers :)

Step 5 Step 6

I didn't have a stick. I tried to use my chopstick but it was too finely made. I walked around in my room looking for something that can work as a stick...saw the incense sticks in the bathroom....took one (sorry roommate, hope you don't mind.)It was round so it was really hard to nail the push pin into it. Like the awesome lai gurl from the village that I am, I chiseled the tip flat with a knife. But alas, when I hammered in the push pin with my lock, the stick split in half. WEAK.

Photobucket Photobucket
Not to be deterred, I walk around some more and found the perfect stick: a pencil! Perfect cuz a hammer was not needed...simply push the pin into the eraser part! I was so excited, I decided to make another one. I made it smaller this time.

Then it was time to go outside to test them! THEY SPUN! Sadly, it was raining and they soon sputtered to a stop, soaked.

But I took a walk outside, enjoying the wind and the rain. It was very refreshing and I was again reminded of how powerful God is. I felt so insignificant and small compared to the howling wind and then overwhelmed to realized the Almighty still chose to love me. I felt so joyous that I even jumped in the puddle in the little fountain thing in the picture below. I was wet...but oh gosh, it was exhilarating.
Square 8

Did you know that the symbolic meaning of a pinwheel is “to turn one’s luck around”...to turn obstacles into opportunities? That's what the pinwheels did today: helped me turn Hurricane Sandy into a memorable, fun experience. What did you do today? peace out :)
