Burma: No to China

Burma has been making a splash in the headlines lately with its revamping of the government. Though the elections were viewed as deeply flawed, the elected president U Thein Sein seems committed to a better Burma. He has freed hundreds of political prisoners, and recently even put a halt on the Myitsone Dam project meant to supply millions of Chinese with electricity because he said that it was not the will of the people. The people!

The Burma-China dam project costs $3.6 billions and is located at the head of the Irrawaddy in the Kachin state. The project, if it goes through, will relocate many villagers and wreck havoc with the environment. There is alot more to the controversy, but that is for another blog. I am just really happy with the recent events in Burma.

Yes, Burma is nowhere near perfection, but every triumph start with a baby step, right?
